The Important Role and Key Factors of Support Insulators in Overhead Transmission Lines

Support insulators are a special kind of insulation control that plays an important role in overhead transmission lines. In the past, support insulators were generally used on power poles and gradually developed to hang many suspended insulators at one end of high voltage line connection towers to increase the creepage distance. They are usually made of silicone rubber or porcelain and are called insulators. Insulators play two core functions in overhead transmission lines, which are supporting power lines and preventing current from flowing back to the ground. These two key points must be guaranteed. Insulators should not cause short-circuit faults due to changes in the environment and electrical loads, otherwise the insulators will lose their effectiveness and harm the use and operational life of the distribution line.

 

Many disc-type insulators are hung on the end of the high voltage line connection tower to increase the creepage distance. They are usually made of laminated glass, porcelain, or plastic and are called insulators. In order to prevent dirt and other contaminants from adhering to the surface of the insulator and causing short-circuit faults through the insulator, which is called creepage. Therefore, the surface spacing, that is, the creepage distance, is increased, which is the distance between the charging and discharging along the insulator surface. Creepage distance = surface spacing / system software high voltage. Depending on the degree of contamination, areas with heavy dirt generally use a creepage distance of 31mm / per KV. A zero-value insulator refers to an insulator whose potential distribution at both ends is close to zero or equal to zero during operation.

 

The impact of zero-value or low-value consumable insulators: the insulation of the distribution line conductor depends on the insulator, because of production defects or external effects such as dirty insulator surfaces or lightning strikes. The insulation characteristics of the insulator will deteriorate continuously. When the insulation resistance decreases or is zero, it is called a low-value consumable or zero-value insulator. Insulators are smooth and can reduce the capacitive effect between cable lines, thereby reducing current loss.
